What You Need to Know About Graduate School

Should You Attend Graduate School

Appropriate Reasons
  • Your chosen career goal requires a graduate degree for an entry level position.
  • It will make you a more marketable candidate for employment.
  • A graduate degree would create opportunities for growth and advancement in your current career.

Inappropriate Reasons

  • You don't have a job after graduation and are not sure what else to do.
  • Avoidance of life/work decisions.
  • The non-academic world seems frightening and overwhelming.

Ask Yourself:

  • Will I attend directly after the completion of my bachelor's degree or wait until later?
For some, it will enhance their qualifications, and for others, it may narrow their field of focus and prevent them from obtaining entry level positions. Experience first and additional degreews later may be your first alternative, particularly if you feel burnout from several years of continuous education.
  • What are employers preferences?
Research your chosen field to determine what the requirements are for your desired position. Advanced degrees do not increase your marketability for some positions. For others, advanced degrees are a necessity.
  • Do my current career goals and academic goals fit together?
Will your current position afford you the time to pursue a graduate degree? There are advantages and disadvantages to part time and full time graduate work.

Part Time vs. Full Time Graduate Work

Part-Time
ADVANTAGES
  • Able to work full time
  • Slower pace allows for greater focus
  • Financial burden dispersed over greater time span

DISADVANTAGES

  • Time
  • Motivation may decrease due to drawn out time frame for completion

Full-Time

ADVANTAGES

  • Expedient Completion of Degree
  • Allow for immersion into graduate work
  • More financial aid options exist for full time

DISADVANTAGERS

  • Significant academic pressures
  • Burnout can occur more rapidly
  • Can further postpone career decisions
